The right battery size isn’t determined simply by the size of your solar system or the number of people in your home.
At Solar 360 / Solargain Hastings, we review your actual electricity usage and solar generation data to understand when and how your home uses energy. We also assess your future energy needs. This allows us to recommend a battery size specifically suited to your household, rather than simply selling you the biggest battery available.
What determines the right battery size?
There are several factors we consider when determining the right battery size for your home, including:
- Your historical electricity consumption
- How much electricity you use during the evening and overnight
- Your existing or proposed solar system size
- How much excess solar you’re currently exporting to the grid
- Your electricity tariff
- Your current feed-in tariff
- Whether you want blackout or backup capability
- EV charging requirements
- Pool pumps
- Electric hot water
- Air conditioning
- Future appliances
- Whether your household’s electricity consumption is likely to increase
We also look beyond your current electricity usage A solar and battery system can be an investment for many years, so we consider how your energy consumption could change in the future.
If you’re considering an EV, switching from gas to electric hot water, installing a pool or spa, adding air conditioning, or simply expect your household’s electricity use to increase, these factors can influence the system we recommend. Where appropriate, we can also recommend battery systems that allow you to expand your storage capacity in the future. This can give you flexibility if your energy requirements increase over time.
Why we don’t recommend the same battery to everyone?
A household using 15kWh per day doesn’t necessarily need a 15kWh battery. What matters is when that electricity is being used. A home that uses most of its electricity during the day may need a very different battery from a home that uses large amounts of electricity between 5pm and midnight. That’s why simply looking at your average daily consumption isn’t enough.
We look at your actual usage patterns, solar generation and energy requirements to determine how much energy you are likely to need stored for later use. The result: a battery tailored to your home
Rather than recommending a one-size-fits-all solution, our approach is to design a system around how your household actually uses energy. Whether you need a smaller battery to maximise your existing solar, a larger battery to reduce your reliance on the grid, or a system designed with future expansion in mind, we’ll help you understand what option makes the most sense for your home.
The goal isn’t to sell you the biggest battery. It’s to recommend the right battery for you.
